"Gentle parenting"

« previous post | next post »

Mrs. Frazzled performs "gentle parenting" on the Signalgate group:

I'm old enough not to be familiar with the term "gentle parenting", though it's definitely Out There.

Mrs. Frazzle's enactment of "gentle parenting" seems to me more like a nursery-school teacher's monologue than a parent's, though neither my parents nor my teachers ever talked this way.

And this sketch suggests that in addition to the prosodic, gestural and postural features, there's some correlated vocabulary. Idioms that I learned from this sketch include:

criss-cross applesauce sitting with crossed legs, "tailor-fashion"
spoons in bowls hands in lap
catch a bubble keep your mouth shut

The links for those phrases all agree with the pre-school context.

It's definitely more preschool teacher than gentle parenting – gentle parenting is more "buddy" than "friends".

I'm not sure if it's a question of age – I'm young enough to have a 4yo daughter, yet I wasn't familiar with the term either.

Mrs. Frazzled uses terms of reference deftly to frame group participants as children (e.g., JD) or as grownups (Mr. Jeffrey).

And then they wonder why they lost the popular vote

Who makes videos like this? What does it achieve? Make liberals look more condescending than they already are?

ah yes thanks the classic refrain:
"My dear friend / family member — science is real, racism is real, facts aren't relative, etc., etc."
    "Ur so condescending" *weeps bitterly*

I had never heard of "gentle parenting" until the advent of this thread on 05-May-2025, and then yesterday I turned on BBC Radio 4 only to hear a speaker talking on the very same topic. Needless to say, I immediately hit the off switch. In my day, the term "parenting" was unknown (at least on the east side of the Atlantic ocean), and one was simply "brought up" (or "raised") by one's parents.

But a REAL pedant insists that animals are "raised," children are "reared."
