« previous post | next post »

The subtitles explain what's going on:

Refrain:

zuò hésuān

做核酸

"do / make nucleic acid"

Using the cultural weight of traditional Chinese poetry to rally people around regular nucleic acid testing and other mandates.

"Li Bai and I are doing nucleic acids"

"Lu You and I are doing nucleic acids"

"Du Mu and I are doing nucleic acids"

Can someone explain this in greater detail? I'm baffled.

What do they mean by "doing nucleic acids"?

That's how they refer to the frequent COVID testing in China.

Those lyrics would seem to work better if you substituted "nucleic" with "lysergic"…

I cannot help but feel that many more readers would have understood a reference to lysergic acid [1] than understood the reference to nucleic acids. Like Joshua, I was completely bemused by the whole thing until Victor kindly explained it …

[1] although I have personally always know it as lysergic acid diethylamide rather than just lysergic acid.
