"Per day" or "today"?

President Trump meets with the Vice Premier of China, Liu He, in the White House:
President Trump hears Liu He say "five million tons of soybeans per day". Liu He reiterates "X-day". Did he say "today" or "per day"?

It sounds like "per day" to me, specifically something non-rhotic like /pəˈdeɪ/.
