In real life he is a charmer, of course

Dinosaur Comics for 7/28/2008 featured Gricean inference:

And the discussion continued on 7/29/2008:

But I was disappointed when the subsequent strips turned out to be about superpowers and time travel instead of relevance theory.

If you have an urge for exploration into relevance while still looking at drawings of dinosaurs, follow the link on the reader art section of the Dinosaur Comics page to "Dadasaurus Rex" which takes advantage of the fact that Dinosaur Comics artwork is static and only the dialogue changes. A new comic is generated each minute from randomly-selected panels.

You should not be disappointed; there are plenty of Dinosaur Comics that discuss linguistic concepts in the archives. It is not always high-brow, but it is often enough.

Some underlying principle makes me want to find relevance in "I've had FIVE girlfriends", but I can't.

    "Dadasaurus Rex"

Ha! That's lovely. I did something similar recently with Garfield, though mine treats the content at a per-token level instead of per-panel.

@Nathan: I assumed it was supposed to be additional evidence that he was charming. But I suppose I don't know how many girlfriends a dinosaur is likely to have had. So maybe I was taken in, and there was no actual relevance.

Oh, don't you worry. He'll revisit relevance theory soon enough. (I was so delighted you mentioned Dino Comics that I had to encourage you!)

@Nathan; Nathan, dinosaurs have as many girlfriends/boyfriends as they deserve to—it is called the Merit principle.

I would infer from T-Rex's statement that he believes that five is a sufficient volume of girlfriends to prove that he's charming, whether or not that's objectively true.

On the other topic, Dinosaur Comics does in fact visit linguistic topics with some frequency. At least, with far greater frequency than many other web-comics. But whether discussing linguistics or other topics, I always find it an enjoyable read.

Oh, I thought it was an astute observation about female dinosaur mate selection preferences at social gatherings. Dino doesn't have girlfriends because chicks don't dig shufflepants. Duh.
