Crowdsourcing Language Revitalization

« previous post | next post »

We often hear of projects for revitalizing or documenting endangered languages obtaining grants, but the Tahltan Language Conservation Initiative folks have a new approach: crowdsourcing. Here is their appeal at Indiegogo, better known as a way of funding technology projects. The rewards that contributors can obtain are materials produced by the project.

It's sad how little funding are they getting. Most people don't even imagine what a huge tragedy it is, the permanent loss of a language.

Yes, I am surprised at how little response they have received. Tahltan is very close to extinction and not well documented, and many people at least say that they are interested in seeing such languages documented and/or revitalized.
