Of course I tried the SAY command after reading this- I am amazed at how far computer speech has come, at least since I last played around with it in SimpleText! The terminal has a very fluid reading style, and very good pronunciation. The youtube audio preview has better cadence, but Apple's computer speech sounds less artificial.

osascript -e 'set Volume 10'
according to the first result that popped up for me Googling "command line osx volume" (not as a quoted phrase).
