Here's some quick follow-up to "Data journalism and film dialogue" — Peter Weinberger sent a link to Thomas Lumley's blog post, "Movie stars broken down by age and sex", StatsChat 4/9/2016, and commented "I've always thought of that as their fate, but no, it's some graphs".

    This is an old joke to market and social researchers but one which still cheers one up. It gets even odder when you are surveying children. But basically almost all survey reports only ever say three things.
    1. On the one hand, this, and on the other hand, that.
    2. Anyway the whole thing is much more complicated than we thought in the first place, and
    3. We recommend further research

    Amongst my people the version is that epidemiologists are physicians broken down by age and sex.

    "Movie stars broken by age and sex" can be a feature in National Equirer or some such.
