Seasonal formulaic pun

« previous post | next post »

From here:

$$\ln \left( \frac{e^{a_r} + p^2 H_a}{N} \right) = w – \ln (y) \\
%
\ln (y) + \ln \left( \frac{e^{a_r} + p^2 H_a}{N} \right) = w \\
%
\ln \left( \frac{e^{a_r} + p^2 H_a}{N} y \right) = w\\
%
\frac{e^{a_r} + p^2 H_a}{N} y = e^w\\
%
\left( H_a p^2 + e^{a_r} \right) y = N e^w\\
%
H_a ppy = N e^w – ye^{a_r}$$

Or in case MathJax doesn't work in your browser:

Please! Some of us are allergic to LaTeX.

Well, personally I use plain TeX, but I wouldn't say my preference is based on anything as strong as an allergy.

Does the Latex Error message contain the pun, or am I doing something wrong?

[(myl) I'm not sure what error message you're getting. The post is basically a piece of MathJax that should render this way:

I've checked it in several browser/OS/machine combinations, but apparently it doesn't work for everyone…]

Well, I get something with a title (shown in the tab) of "Overleaf", which was mostly a rather dark grey, except for what looks like a tool bar across the top that's mostly black, with some dark-grey symbols that are too dark grey to read. There's also a little blue-and-white striped rectangle at the upper right that says "Loading" and "Pleas wait …". That was an hour or so ago, and it hasn't changed. I think I'll just close it now … Yeah; that worked.

It failed for me. Two of the problems turned out to be two non-ASCII dashes (one in the first line, one in the last) which should have been ASCII minuses. Then I was using a LaTeX viewer which ignored everything after the first %, but that was that viewer's fault.

The other problem is (IMHO), it's not even very amusing…. :(

[(myl) It's certainly not worth the trouble everyone seems to be having even seeing it…]

And what I get, at the linked site (https://www.overleaf.com/3957755qbxwwj#/11470125/), is a window mostly obscured by this error message emblazoned over it:

    LaTeX Error: Missing \begin{document}.

See the LaTeX manual or LaTeX Companion for explanation.
Type H <return> for immediate help.

    l.1 \(
         \)\documentclass{article}

The site is apparently supposed to exhibit raw LaTeX code in the left window and show you the formatted result in the right window, but it just doesn't work. If not even \documentclass{article} can be interpreted, it suggests that virtually nothing of LaTeX's resources are there.

Well, I thought it was clever. Harrumph.
