Mark Liberman has beaten the drum at least since his <a href=\"http:\/\/ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/LSATalk.pdf\">2007 LSA plenary address<\/a> (see: \"<a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=4067\">Linguistics: The Magazine<\/a>\"), and there have been a few <a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=2908\">recent<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/stancarey.wordpress.com\/2012\/11\/28\/babel-a-new-language-magazine\/\">efforts<\/a> along these lines. But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelerard.com\">Michael Erard<\/a>, author of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/004788.html\">Um&#8230;<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=3758\">Babel No More<\/a><\/em>, has taken matters into his own hands by launching an online magazine called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/schwa-fire.com\/\">Schwa Fire<\/a><\/em> to specialize in high-quality long-form language journalism.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Erard is using Kickstarter to fund the launch of <em>Schwa Fire<\/em> and drum up interest for the project. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/845319788\/ignite-the-schwa-fire\/\">Here's the pitch<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Meet\u00a0<em>Schwa Fire<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Schwa Fire<\/em> is a digital publication that will marry language geekery with long-form journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I\u2019ve been saying that\u00a0<em>Schwa Fire<\/em> is going to be like\u00a0<em>This American Life<\/em>, but for language. We'll look at life through a linguistic lens, and look at lives and circumstances in the language world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Stories  will be relevant to the times and accountable to the facts, and you  won't have to become a linguist to understand them. We don't profess; we  inquire. We'll commission pieces from people who know both  story-telling and language because they've been involved in both for  years. This expertise will allow them to dive into the language-related  implications of a story while keeping readers asking \"What happened  next?\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Why now?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The expanding audience that enjoys  non-fiction about language, speech, and communication needs  this.\u00a0Copyeditors, poets, translators, teachers, language learners,  localizers, policy wonks, speechwriters, linguists, grammarheads, word  freaks, Scrabble devotees, programmers, corporate namers, spelling bee  coaches, crossword fans, public speakers, speech therapists, language  scientists of all stripes:\u00a0<em>Schwa Fire<\/em> is for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Fortunately,  it\u2019s a good time for stories about language &#8212; we need this lens  uniquely to help us make sense of the world we live in.
