But in Silicon Valley, amid the competitive artificial intelligence craze, grinding \u201c996\u201d is the way to get ahead. Or at least to signal to those around you that you\u2019re taking work seriously.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"gmail-css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"gmail-css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The number combo refers to a work schedule \u2014 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week \u2014 that has its origins in <a class=\"gmail-css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/29\/technology\/china-996-jack-ma.html__;!!IBzWLUs!WOrfFGKD8WZTNMGkNFQqCZqPQYGw7wQlSnAffXdOTzZEaUXgx_PJWjH177CkdW4ERQGhenJuSBzxsRo$\">China\u2019s hard-charging tech scene<\/a>.
