of mistranslation inherent in the genre.\u00a0 To unpack the crash, let's begin with the standard Language Log romanization, transcription, and translation:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">ch\u0113d\u01ce zh\u012bsh\u00ec y\u0101nr\u00f2u m\u00f3g\u016b mi\u00e0n<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u8f66\u6253\u829d\u58eb\u814c\u8089\u8611\u83c7\u9762<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\"cheddar cheese bacon mushroom noodles\"<\/p>\n<p>All the online translators do a better job than the mishmash on Facebook, and Google Translate gets it perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>Shaofu Chang's exegesis on the Facebook comment thread is instructive:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/~bgzimmer\/carhit2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/~bgzimmer\/carhit2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are other sinoglyphic transcriptions for \"cheddar\" (e.g., qi\u0113d\u00e1 \u5207\u8fbe, qi\u0113d\u00e9 \u5207\u5fb7 [the characters bear no relevant meanings]), but \"ch\u0113d\u01ce\u00a0\u8f66\u6253\" (\"car beat\") is quite common.\u00a0 Similarly, there are other sinitic translations for \"cheese\" (e.g., n\u01ceil\u00e0o \u5976\u916a, g\u0101nl\u00e0o \u5e72\u916a), but \"zh\u012bsh\u00ec\u00a0\u829d\u58eb\" is also commonplace.<\/p>\n<p><b>Addendum<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When I was just about to make this post and gathering entries for the \"Selected readings\", I realized that I had written about the identical menu item
