The original furniture said the fireworks display was on Christmas Eve. This was incorrect and has been removed.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 5px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/GuardianFurniture1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/GuardianFurniture0.png\" width=\"490\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>That note now has \"subheading\" in place of \"furniture\":<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/GuardianFurniture2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/GuardianFurniture2.png\" width=\"490\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And shortly after the original query, Bob sent in the answer &#8212; according to <a href=\"http:\/\/image.guardian.co.uk\/sys-files\/Guardian\/documents\/2011\/08\/26\/EducCentNewsterminology.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Guardian's own \"Newspaper terminology\" page<\/a>, \"Page furniture\" means \"everything on the page except pictures or text of stories\".<\/p>\n<p>The term <em><strong>subheading<\/strong><\/em> didn't seem quite right to me, because the corrected date information is actually in in a picture caption:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/GuardianFurniture3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/GuardianFurniture3a.png\" width=\"490\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I always through that <strong><em>subheading<\/em><\/strong> (or <em><strong>subhead<\/strong><\/em>, or whatever) referred to the summary line below the headline, as below in the cited article:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/GuardianFurniture4.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/GuardianFurniture4.png\" width=\"490\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But maybe I'm wrong &#8212; the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/subheading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wiktionary entry<\/a> suggests that I might be. The Guardian's \"Newspaper terminology\" page doesn't have an entry for <em><strong>subheading<\/strong><\/em>, so there's no answer from that quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on the <strong><em>furniture<\/em><\/strong> front, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/furniture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wiktionary entry<\/a> does give us sense #7:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">(<em>journalism<\/em>) Any material on the page other than the text and pictures of stories.<\/p>\n<p>The OED hasn't caught up with this one yet, but does offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/75684\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">palette of vaguely analogous senses<\/a>, including<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Apparel, dress, outfit, personal belongings.<br \/>\nArmour, accoutrements, weapons, munitions of war.<br \/>\nThe harness, housings, trappings, etc. of a horse or other draught animal [&#8230;] Similarly, the hood, bells, etc. of a hawk.<br \/>\nHangings and ornamental drapery; also, the coverlets and linen for a bed.<br \/>\nImplements, tools, utensils; rigging, stores, and tackle of a ship; military engines and defensive works.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and especially:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Accessories, appendages. (Formerly also <em>plural<\/em> in the same sense.)
