{"id":56111,"date":"2022-09-09T09:53:59","date_gmt":"2022-09-09T14:53:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=56111"},"modified":"2022-09-09T10:45:38","modified_gmt":"2022-09-09T15:45:38","slug":"long-live-our-noble-kingn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=56111","title":{"rendered":"\"Long live our noble Kingn\""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/OurNobleKingn0.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/OurNobleKingn1.png\" width=\"200\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>A story in this morning's Guardian (Alex Finnis, \"<a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/national-anthem-lyrics-how-words-change-god-save-the-king-queen-death-1843957\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Anthem lyrics: How the words will change to God Save The King after the Queen\u2019s death<\/a>\") evokes the (now generally unfair) nickname of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Grauniad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grauniad<\/a><\/em>, spelling <em>King<\/em> as \"Kingn\".<\/p>\n<p>I've been told that the issue behind the nickname arose because the Guardian was typeset in Manchester (where it was founded), and then the printed copies were shipped by train to London. There was typically only one edition per day, and so typographical errors could not be corrected in later editions, as they could be for London-based papers, where the edition printed in the wee hours would be superseded by editions printed at intervals throughout the day.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Guardian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a> has some of the story but not the geographical part (which may not be true?)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Frequent typographical errors during the age of manual typesetting led Private Eye magazine to dub the paper the \"Grauniad\" in the 1960s, a nickname still used occasionally by the editors for self-mockery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Update &#8212; and also in the last verse, we see:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/OnHerBePleased.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It's not a typo, but the retention of \"her\" in the opening sequence is also worthy of a snicker:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Thy choicest gifts in store,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">On <strong><em>her<\/em><\/strong> be pleased to pour,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Long may <strong><em>he<\/em><\/strong> reign!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[h\/t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theology.ox.ac.uk\/people\/dr-k-m-adam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A K M Adam<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>And in other news:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Can't believe we have a man as queen.
