The Columbia Journalism Review published an anthology of ambiguous headlinese in 1980 with a title that is a classic of the genre: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Squad-Helps-Victim-Other-Nations\/dp\/0385158289\"><em>Squad Helps Dog Bite Victim<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Like that old chestnut, the BBC News headline causes problems because the words following the verb\u00a0<em>help\u00a0<\/em>can be interpreted differently depending on how the parts of speech are parsed:\u00a0<em>bite\u00a0<\/em>in\u00a0<em>dog bite victim<\/em> and\u00a0<em>stab\u00a0<\/em>in\u00a0<em>stab victims<\/em> can be construed by readers as verbs instead of the intended nouns.<\/p>\n<p>Another crash blossom involving <em>help<\/em> is a headline from the (UK) <em>Times<\/em>\u00a0noted by Mark Liberman in 2017: \"<a href=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=31344\">Queen Mother tried to help abuse girl<\/a>.\" The ambiguity in that one is heightened by the fact that it involves the type of noun-noun compounding often seen in the British press (sometimes extended into spectacular <a href=\"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=48172\">noun piles<\/a>). Understanding the headline requires knowing that <em>abuse girl<\/em> refers to a particular girl who was abused. At least the noun-noun compound in the latest BBC headline, <em>stab victims<\/em>, is a common collocation. But given that the complement of the verb\u00a0<em>help<\/em> can begin with either a noun or the bare-infinitive form of a verb, readers have to decide on the fly which part of speech an ambiguous word like <em>stab<\/em> belongs to.
