{"id":47834,"date":"2020-07-24T08:23:30","date_gmt":"2020-07-24T13:23:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=47834"},"modified":"2020-07-24T08:26:57","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T13:26:57","slug":"never-get-stuck-in-a-bunker-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=47834","title":{"rendered":"Never get stuck in a bunker again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today this ad popped up for me on a newspaper site:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/StuckInABunker.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/StuckInABunker.png\" width=\"490\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I tried to figure out how the mysterious object on the left could be used to tunnel out through concrete and earth, and how it could safely be combined with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Composition_C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C-3 plastic explosive<\/a>, and what all this has to do with the woman on the right brandishing a stick amid the explosion. I also wondered why exploding their way out of bomb shelters should be on peoples' minds these days.<\/p>\n<p>Then I realized that it was about golf.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Of course, the word <em>bunker<\/em> is ambiguous: Wiktionary <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/bunker#English\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gives 10 senses<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>(military)<\/em> A hardened shelter, often buried partly or fully underground, designed to protect the inhabitants from falling bombs or other attacks.<\/li>\n<li><em>(Britain)<\/em> A large container or bin for storing coal, often built outside in the yard of a house. Now rare, as different types of fuels and energy sources are being used.<\/li>\n<li><em>(nautical)<\/em> A container for storing coal or fuel oil for a ship's engine. [Also, by extension] the quantity of fuel needed to replenish that container.<\/li>\n<li><em>(rail transport)<\/em> the coal compartment on a tank engine.<\/li>\n<li><em>(golf)<\/em> A sand-filled hollow on a golf course.<\/li>\n<li><em>(paintball)<\/em> An obstacle used to block an opposing player's view and field of fire.<\/li>\n<li><em>(Scotland)<\/em> A sort of chest or box, as in a window, the lid of which serves for a seat.<\/li>\n<li><em>(Scotland, slang)<\/em> A kitchen worktop.<\/li>\n<li><em>(Britain, slang)<\/em> One who bunks off; a truant from school.<\/li>\n<li>Certain fish, menhaden.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It tells you something about me that it took me a few seconds to make the golf connection.
