{"id":4056,"date":"2012-07-05T06:20:37","date_gmt":"2012-07-05T11:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=4056"},"modified":"2012-07-05T07:39:16","modified_gmt":"2012-07-05T12:39:16","slug":"from-wraith-to-smoking-duck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=4056","title":{"rendered":"From wraith to smoking duck"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/DarkwingDuck.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/DarkwingDuck.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>I <a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=4053\">previously described<\/a> the evolution of the Higgs Boson from Leon Lederman's \"wraithlike presence throughout the universe that is keeping us from understanding the true nature of matter\", perhaps bowdlerized by his editors from \"the goddamn particle\" to \"the God particle\", and onwards to Dennis Overbye's \"kind of cosmic molasses [&#8230;] that would impart mass to formerly massless particles trying to move through it like a celebrity trying to get to the bar\".<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, the high-energy euphoria at CERN seems to have excited some really exotic metaphorical resonances, combining the elementary building-blocks of cultural cognition in ways not normally seen on earth.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0\"<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/07\/04\/us-science-higgs-idUSBRE86008K20120704\">It's a boson: Higgs quest bears new particle<\/a>\", <em>Reuters<\/em> 7\/4\/2012:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\"The fact that both our teams have independently come to the same results is very powerful,\" Oliver Buchmueller, a senior physicist on one of the research teams, told Reuters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\"We know it is a new boson. But we still have to prove definitively that it is the one that Higgs predicted.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\"If I were a betting man, I would bet that it is the Higgs. But we can't say that definitely yet. It is very much a smoking duck that walks and quacks like the Higgs.
