{"id":2814,"date":"2010-12-01T08:53:40","date_gmt":"2010-12-01T13:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=2814"},"modified":"2010-12-01T08:53:40","modified_gmt":"2010-12-01T13:53:40","slug":"lexical-obamanations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=2814","title":{"rendered":"Lexical Obamanations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sorethumbs.keenspot.com\/d\/20101129.html\">Today's Sore Thumbs<\/a> starts with this panel:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/Obamapression1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/Obamapression1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nThe explanation, and more anti-Obama blends:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/Obamapression2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click to embiggen\" src=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/Obamapression2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the exception of <i>Obamacare<\/i>, these are actually rather rare, and somewhat unstable in meaning &#8212; thus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?source=ig&#038;hl=en&#038;rlz=&#038;=&#038;q=obamapression&#038;btnG=Google+Search&#038;aq=f&#038;oq=\">Obamapression<\/a> seems to be split between a blend with <i>depression<\/i> and a blend with <i>oppression<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p>I can't think of very many cases of presidential-name blending as a popular activity. There's Reaganomics, Nixonomics, Clintonomics, and some sporadic coinages with <i>-ology<\/i> and  <i>-olatry<\/i>.
