An especially nice specimen came up in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kGRyz_61lS4\" target=\"_blank\">rally in Iowa on Thursday<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><audio style=\"width: 230px;\" controls=\"controls\"><source src=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/TrumpPraeteritio.wav\" type=\"audio\/wav\" \/>Your browser does not support the audio element.<\/audio><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 12px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10px; color: #a00000;\"><br \/>\nSo should I hit these people? No I won't.<br \/>\nBut so here's what happened.<br \/>\nSo this very very great governor &#8212;<br \/>\nlike your governor's a great governor &#8212;<br \/>\nthis very great guy's a friend of mine calls me up.<br \/>\nHow's it going?<br \/>\nI said man! I been hit.<br \/>\nThese people are hittin me,<br \/>\nI'm gonna go &#8212; and I was all set &#8212;<br \/>\nI was gonna go, and I was gonna talk about each individual one of them,<br \/>\nI was gonna say that De Blasio's the worst mayor in the history of our city but I couldn't say it,<br \/>\noh he's a terrible mayor,<br \/>\nprobably won't be there too long cuz he's got problems like you wouldn't believe,<br \/>\nbut he's a terrible mayor.<br \/>\nBut I was gonna say that but now I won't say it.<br \/>\nBut- but I was gonna talk about other people, so<br \/>\nviciously because I have so many things to say.<br \/>\nAnd he goes no, what are you doing?<br \/>\nI said, what are you talkin about?<br \/>\nHe said don't hit there.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I'm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sourceid=chrome-psyapi2&amp;ion=1&amp;espv=2&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;q=TRump%20praeteritio\" target=\"_blank\">far from the first person to have noticed this characteristic\u00a0of Mr. Trump's style<\/a>. He's\u00a0even featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apophasis#Examples\" target=\"_blank\">the Wikipedia entry for this rhetorical device<\/a>, which cites Igor Bobik, \"<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/donald-trump-rhetorical-device_us_56c358cbe4b0c3c55052b32b\" target=\"_blank\">He Would Never Say It, But This Is Donald Trump\u2019s Favorite Rhetorical Device<\/a>\", Huffington Post 2\/6\/2016, and quotes these examples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\"I promised I would not say that [Carly Fiorina] ran Hewlett-Packard into the ground, that she laid off tens of thousands of people and she got viciously fired. I said I will not say it, so I will not say it.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\"I refuse to call [Megyn Kelly] a bimbo, because that would not be politically correct.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the De Blasio riff quoted above, Trump puts front-and-center an aspect of this device that is usually only implicit: breaking the \"fourth wall\" and talking with the audience as if they were behind the scenes with him, discussing\u00a0his choices in public rhetoric.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of Donald Trump's characteristic rhetorical devices is praeteritio (\"passing over\"), where the speaker says something by saying they're not going to say it.
