{"id":21224,"date":"2015-09-14T07:29:33","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T12:29:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=21224"},"modified":"2015-09-15T03:24:02","modified_gmt":"2015-09-15T08:24:02","slug":"raw-cyber-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=21224","title":{"rendered":"Raw \"cyber\" information"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xkcd.com\/1573\/\" target=\"_blank\">recent xkcd<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"We had gathered that raw information, but had yet to put it all together.\" src=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/myl\/cyberintelligence.png\" alt=\"\" align=\"center\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mouseover title: \"We had gathered that raw information, but had yet to put it all together.\"<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Hate to spoil the joke, but Google Scholar finds <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar?as_ylo=2014&amp;q=cyberintelligence&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=0,39\" target=\"_blank\">452 publications on cyberintelligence since 2014<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar?q=cybersecurity&amp;btnG=&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=0%2C39&amp;as_ylo=2014\" target=\"_blank\">8,330 publications on cybersecurity in the same period<\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar?q=cyber&amp;btnG=&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=0%2C39&amp;as_ylo=2014\" target=\"_blank\">30,200 publications using the bare lexeme <em><strong>cyber<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Google Books ngrams won't track past 2008, and suggests a leveling off around 2004, but clearly <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/ngrams\/graph?content=cyber&amp;year_start=1985&amp;year_end=2015&amp;corpus=15&amp;smoothing=3&amp;share=&amp;direct_url=t1%3B%2Ccyber%3B%2Cc0\" target=\"_blank\">the graph didn't go to 0 in 2005<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/ngrams\/interactive_chart?content=cyber&amp;year_start=1985&amp;year_end=2015&amp;corpus=15&amp;smoothing=3&amp;share=&amp;direct_url=t1%3B%2Ccyber%3B%2Cc0\" name=\"ngram_chart\" width=\"500\" height=\"280\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And the NYT index gives 1,290 results for the lexeme <strong><em>cyber<\/em><\/strong> within the past 12 months &#8212; but only 107 hits for the 12 months from 1\/1\/2000 to 1\/1\/2001. (Or looking at one of the many prefixed forms, 771 hits in the last 12 months for \"cybersecurity\", versus 3 hits for the period 1\/1\/2000 to 1\/1\/2001&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>So what does Randall Munroe, always extraordinarily well informed, have in mind?
