There are some intriguing features about this Japanese poster<\/a> for Expendables 3:<\/p>\n

Notice that the furigana ruby for \u9802\u4e0a\u6c7a\u6226 (ch\u014dj\u014d kessen \u3061\u3087\u3046\u3058\u3087\u3046\u3051\u3063\u305b\u3093 [\u201csummit showdown\u201d]) is \u30ef\u30fc\u30eb\u30c9\u30b7\u30ea\u30fc\u30ba (w\u0101rudo shir\u012bzu [\"World Series\u201d]).\u00a0 One wonders what they mean by that in the context of this film.<\/p>\n

In English language publicity for the film, I'm not aware of wording similar to junbi wa \u012b ka \u6e96\u5099\u306f\u3044\u3044\u304b\uff1f (\"Are you ready?\") or ch\u014dj\u014d kessen \u9802\u4e0a\u6c7a\u6226 (\"summit showdown\u201d).\u00a0 Furthermore, so far as I know, w\u0101rudo shir\u012bzu \u30ef\u30fc\u30eb\u30c9\u30b7\u30ea\u30fc\u30ba (\"World Series\u201d) isn't used in Japanese to refer to anything other than the major league baseball championship.<\/p>\n

Lest you be led to believe from its prominent position on the poster that w\u0101rudo shir\u012bzu \u30ef\u30fc\u30eb\u30c9\u30b7\u30ea\u30fc\u30ba (\"World Series\u201d) is the Japanese title of the film, note that the actual title of the film is given in katakana just beneath the dramatic sloping line of heroes, followed by w\u0101rudo misshon \u30ef\u30fc\u30eb\u30c9\u30df\u30c3\u30b7\u30e7\u30f3 (\"world mission\"), which is the subtitle for Expendables 3.\u00a0 Perhaps the \"world\" here stimulated the copywriters to come up with the \"World Series\" furigana annotation for ch\u014dj\u014d kessen \u9802\u4e0a\u6c7a\u6226 (\"summit showdown\u201d).\u00a0 After all, this is the final battle, the battle to end all battles, isn't it?<\/p>\n

In a quick scan of the Google images for Expendables 3<\/a>,\u00a0I came across this curious takeoff<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Somebody else was thinking along the same lines as the Japanese copywriters.<\/p>\n

Junbi wa \u012b ka \u6e96\u5099\u306f\u3044\u3044\u304b\uff1f (\"Are you ready?\") and ch\u014dj\u014d kessen \u9802\u4e0a\u6c7a\u6226 (\"summit showdown\u201d) are advertising slogans (kyatchikop\u012b \u30ad\u30e3\u30c3\u30c1\u30b3\u30d4\u30fc [\"catch-copy\"] in Japanese) for this movie.\u00a0 On Japanese movie posters, there are often phrases or words that represent a movie.\u00a0 Such kyatchikop\u012b \u30ad\u30e3\u30c3\u30c1\u30b3\u30d4\u30fc (\"catch-copy\") is added even when the original posters for foreign films are made without them.\u00a0 Sometimes these phrases and words function as crucial features of successful advertisements for indigenous Japaese productions.\u00a0 One of the major examples is a series of slogans made by Itoi Shigesato \u7cf8\u4e95\u91cd\u91cc<\/a> for animations of the Studio Ghibli (Miyazaki Hayao's studio).<\/p>\n
