From a Japanese correspondent:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u5c71\u91ce\u5c0f\u62fe looks like Chinese to me. I googled it, and the sites are all in Chinese. If it was Japanese, it could be \u5c71\u91ce = sanya (on doku) or Yamano (kun doku) \u5c0f\u62fe kojuu (kun + on doku) or shoojuu (ondoku). But, I think this naming is rather unlikely in Japanese. judging from the items they are selling on those Chinese sites (dried mushrooms, etc.), it might be a brand name which means 'small gathering from the wilderness'.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u97f3\u8aad\uff08on doku [Chinese style reading])\u30fb\u8a13\u8aad (kun doku [Japanese style reading])<\/p>\n<p>I agree with all of these observations.<\/p>\n<p>Another Japanese correspondent states that it is hard to figure out how to read:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yamano sh\u014dsh\u016b \u3084\u307e\u306e\u3057\u3087\u3046\u3057\u3085\u3046<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yamano sh\u014dj\u016b \u3084\u307e\u306e\u3057\u3087\u3046\u3058\u3085\u3046<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yamano Kobiroi \u3084\u307e\u306e\u3053\u3073\u308d\u3044 (as a proper name)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(among other possibilities)<\/p>\n<p>Since the company is in China, I believe that we need to treat the name as Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it's Chinese or Japanese, \"Rural Amorous Feelings\" is an odd translation of \u5c71\u91ce\u5c0f\u62fe.<\/p>\n<p>Fair enough, sh\u0101ny\u011b \u5c71\u91ce (\"hill and dale; mountain wilds; mountains and plains\") may be said to account for \"rural\".<\/p>\n<p>The character shi \u62fe has another usage than \"glean; collect\"), as in the phrase t\u00f3ngni\u00e1n \u01d2u shi \u7ae5\u5e74\u5076\u62fe (\"idle memories of youth\"), where it is not referring to physical objects that people pick up, but rather to trifles that they gather, hence \"memories\" or even \"feelings\". This may account for the \"feelings\" in the wording on the package. Still, \"Rural Amorous Feelings\" is hard to account for in toto.<\/p>\n<p>Stretching credulity as far as possible, I wonder whether the y\u011b \u91ce, which can have unsavory implications such as ambition and uncouth or inappropriate behavior, might have been the root of the \"amorous\" translation. In ancient China, there was definitely a connection between y\u011b \u91ce (\"wild[ernes]s\") and \"licentiousness; sexual intercourse\".<\/p>\n<p>See Paul R. Goldin, \"The Motif of the Woman in the Doorway and Related Imagery in Traditional Chinese Funerary Art,\" <em>Journal of the American Oriental Society<\/em>, 121.4 (2001), 539-548, especially about copulating in the wild, with old and highly graphic illustrations.<\/p>\n<p>Confucius himself was said to have been conceived when his parents y\u011bh\u00e9 \u91ce\u5408 (lit., \"copulated \/ came together in the wilderness\"; i.e., \"illicit copulation; illicit sexual relations\"). See \"<a href=\"http:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/17427\/6-famous-bastards-who-made-their-mark\">6 Famous Bastards Who Made Their Mark<\/a>\" (Confucius is #1 on the list).<\/p>\n<p>For the textual basis of this tradition, see the first citation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdic.net\/c\/e\/13e\/307567.htm\">here<\/a>, from the biography of Confucius in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sima_Qian\">Sima Qian<\/a>\u00a0(China's Thucydides), <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Records_of_the_Grand_Historian\">The Grand Scribe's Records<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The full form of the expression describing Confucius' parents' union is y\u011bh\u00e9 \u00e9r sh\u0113ng \u91ce\u5408\u800c\u751f (\"born from copulation in the wild[ernes]s\"), the short form of which would be y\u011bsh\u0113ng \u91ce\u751f (\"wilderness born\", i.e., \"born out of wedlock; illegitimate; a bastard\").<\/p>\n<p>Of course, later Confucian apologists went into contortions falling over each other in their efforts to deny that (\"joining in the wild[ernes]s\") meant what it seemed to.<\/p>\n<p>One correspondent suggested that the mushrooms may have aphrodisiac properties, but I suspect that the \"amorous\" part of the translation comes from y\u011b \u91ce, as analyzed in the previous paragraphs. Hence, y\u011b \u91ce is doing double duty, signifying \"wilds\" and at the same time implying \"dissoluteness\", i.e., \"indulging in sensual pleasures\".
