Pets with buttons

The social media site r/PetsWithButtons (created in 2020) is full of interesting observations and questions. One of my favorites is "My cat has started to use “vacuum” as a curse word":
Basically the title. I gave him a “vacuum” button because the vacuum is stressful for him and I wanted to be able to clearly communicate that the vacuum was going to happen and let him know “vacuum all done.” He definitely knows what it means because when the vacuum is running he will push “vacuum” repeatedly and also add “nervous” in there too. But now he has started spamming vacuum after I tell him no, like he is using it as a curse word. For example, he will ask for “snackie” when we JUST got done with snackie and I will say “snackie all done” and then he will go spam the vacuum button. Yeah, ok bud, I hear you loud and clear that you feel “vacuum” about “snackie all done.” Or he snuck a lick from the end of my spicy curry dish (I did not authorize this, I looked away for ONE second), I could tell he regretted this (spicy), and then he went and pressed “snackie vacuum.” Yeah, ok bud, that snackie made your mouth feel “vacuum”.
I don’t know what I’m asking really, just commiserating. I guess maybe he needs a “mad” button?
I doubt that the "mad' button would work as well as the "vacuum" button, for the same reason that curses is only a good curse in (ironic interpretations of) bowdlerized fiction…
Some other r/PetsWithButtons samples: "My cat wants more words? or there’s too many?"; "Last night I had some regrets about giving my cat a walk button.."; "Suggestions for new words"; "Most used buttons"; "URGENT: Cat not eating (treat button)".
A 2017 paper surveyed the emergence of Animal-Computer Interaction as an engineering and scientific discipline — but now it's a social media site.

Reportedly Washoe used the sign for "dirty" in this way.

I'm not sure I really believe this story. A cat not only uses a word (which is not too hard to believe), but invents an extended sense of that word (which is truly extraordinary)?

But is it ("truly extraordinary", that is) ? To my mind, the cat never "understood" the word in the first place, or not as we (humans) would have understood it. The cat gleaned some sense of the semantics of the word, but these were by no means as clear to the cat as they would be to us. It would therefore not seem unreasonable (to me, at least) that the extended meaning ascribed to the word by the cat was just as "logical" a meaning (logical to the cat, that is) as the meaning intended by the human.

But I would love to know more about the origins of "PetsWithButtons" — I have tried repeatedly scrolling to the bottom of the page, but the oldest post I can find is time-stamped just eight months ago, whereas "PetsWithButton" was apparently created/started in November 2020. Is there any way of reading the oldest post thereon ?

You can get the subreddit in the old (non-dynamic) layout, sorted in reverse chronological order: https://old.reddit.com/r/PetsWithButtons/new/ .
That shows the 25 most recent posts. Underneath them, there's something that says "view more: [next>]". Clicking on the "next" button many, many, many times should ultimately get you to the oldest post.

Thank you Michael. Using Ctrl-minus sufficient times allows the "Next" button to remain visible, so now all I need to do is set aside several hours to click repeatedly on "Next" until I achieve my goal. I tried playing with the "Count" parameter, but sadly to no avail, and the "After" parameter appears too unpredicatable to be hackable …

With very sincere thanks to Michael Watts, and for the benefit of any other reader of Language Log who is as intrigued as I was to find out how "PetsWithButtons" came into existence, here is what I now believe to be the very first post in that particular thread :

Oh, I've heard a very similar story from someone who has dogs, cats and buttons. It involved the "poop" button, of course.
